book beginnings on friday 9/2/11 September 2, 2011

Filed under: book beginnings on friday — Andrea @ 8:07 am

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by A Few More Pages where we share the first line or two of the book we’re currently reading and give our impressions on them.

This week, I’m reading Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta.  Here are the first two lines:

My father took one hundred and thirty-two minutes to die.
I counted.

Yikes.  Talk about a hook.  I wanted to keep reading to find out: Why did her father die?  Why she was there?  Why did she count the minutes?  Did she try to help him?  I’m about 1/3 of the way through, and I don’t know any of those answers yet.  Frustrating?  Yes.  But at least the book is entertaining while I wait.

  1. Wow!!! Yeah, that is certainly an awesome hook!! Especially the “I counted”. Makes me wonder what kind of story this is gunna be. Really interesting!

  2. Okay, now I’m officially curious! Did she kill him? Is that why she was there counting the minutes?

    Thanks for sharing….

  3. Wow. That’s quite a beginning. Wondering why she’s counting.
